Though there are a variety of small differences between these two figures - one is wearing a hat, one is not; one is looking at a phone, one is looking out; one is wearing sunglasses, while the other has them in her lap - they remain united under the shade of the umbrella. I wanted to examine a relationship between these two people with subtle visual clues, as well as explore the building of a safe space or room in a natural environment.

This painting is based off of a reference photo and several sketches of my parents on a visit to Tybee Island, Georgia in 2023.
